In October 1996, Marmite launched a campaign using the strapline “Love it or Hate it“.

It has since been accepted as a truth that we are either one or the other.

The problem I have is that I'm neither. I'd eat it but I wouldn't choose it. (I've finished off toast that my children have left.) I don't mind Marmite.

The world seems to want to separate us into Them and Us, and polarised versions of each - Brexiteers or Remainers, Dog Lovers or Cat Lovers, even Toilet Roll Over or Toilet Roll Under! This creates division and reduces people to extremes of those characteristics, and incites name-calling - "You're just a....!"

This is where Elastic Thinking comes in.

The world that we live in is rapidly changing and there is a call for people to start thinking differently. We should avoid fallen into old traps that limit our thinking and be more creative in challenging the way we think. This can start with the way in which we think about those people we don't agree with.

The assembly ends with the words "You know my name but not my story. You've heard what I've done but not what I've been through."

Challenge your thinking. Understand our differences.
